The Barn Owl appears in the first book and the TV series. In the book he is asked by Fox whether he has seen the other Farthing Wood animals, and informs Fox that he had a conversation with Tawny Owl who told him all about the animals' journey. This lets Fox know the others are safe, but he can't say where the animals are heading because Tawny Owl did not tell him that information. In the TV series Vixen is also present and takes part in the conversation, which is otherwise largely the same as in the book.
