Hare (right) and Mrs Hare (left) in the TV series

The Farthing Wood Hares are among the animals who travel from Farthing Wood to White Deer Park in both the books and the TV series.

Books[]

In the books, the group consists of Hare, Mrs Hare and their two leverets. Their speed means they are not usually in difficulty on the journey; they have no mishaps crossing the river or the roads. One of these leverets would go on to be known as Leveret once the animals reached the park. The other is killed and eaten by a stoat during the events of the second book, In the Grip of Winter. During Fox's Feud, Mrs Hare is killed in an attack by Scarface and Hare dies of old age prior to the events of The Siege of White Deer Park, along with many of the other animals who made the original journey. Leveret finds a mate and has a daughter called Dash. Leveret and Dash both survive until the end of the final book.

The ancestors of the Farthing Wood hares appear in Farthing Wood: The Adventure Begins, the prequel set five years before the journey to White Deer Park. The hares have a very minor role in the book, but two of them do appear at the original Farthing Wood assembly organised by Kindly Badger, leaving shortly after the meeting begins.

TV series[]

In the TV series, Hare and Mrs Hare have no leverets during the journey to White Deer Park, but they have two children during the second series. One of these hares is Leveret and the other is unnamed. However, neither Leveret nor Dash is named until the third series. Mrs Hare is killed by Scarface late in the second series and Hare disappears prior to the third series, presumably dying of old age as he does in the books. Leveret appears in one episode during the third series and then disappears with no explanation, but Dash is present until the end of the series.

In the third series, there is another unnamed hare who helps the Farthing Wood animals locate the headquarters of the rats, but it is unclear whether this hare is a descendant of the original Farthing Wood hares or not.
