Whistler's Quarry is the ninth episode of the first series of The Animals of Farthing Wood. It was originally broadcast in the UK on 3 March 1993.

PlotEdit

Kestrel has found a nearby quarry and the animals set off towards it. Badger explains to Fox why he had to leave the voles and fieldmice behind, but Fox's mind is on Vixen. Toad is feeling very tired so Fox offers to carry him on his back, and Vixen carries some of the other small animals. They all arrive at the quarry but it is surrounded by a fence which only the smaller animals can get through. Mole digs under the fence allowing the other animals to enter the quarry.

They all have a drink and several animals go for a swim. Soon a heron called Whistler comes forward and introduces himself. He tells the animals he was shot in the wing during a pheasant shoot, causing him to make a whistling sound when he flies. Whistler offers to catch fish for the animals' breakfast. Toad tries to fish like Whistler and is caught by a carp, but Whistler catches the carp and saves Toad's life. Whistler reveals that he has been after the fish for years, but Toad takes pity on it and asks him to throw it back. Whistler is intrigued by Toad's decision and decides to join the animals on their journey. Whistler and Vixen take the oath before the animals continue on their journey.

Shortly they walk into a pheasant shoot and take cover to hide from the hunter and his dog. However, one of the baby rabbits runs out into the open and is shot dead by the hunter. His parents tearfully comfort each other but the other animals are safe as the hunter has left.

TriviaEdit

  • This episode marks the first appearance of Whistler, the only appearance of the carp, and the death of one of the baby rabbits.
  • This is the only episode not to have any scenes cut from the "From Copse to Quarry" VHS.

GoofsEdit

  • When Whistler and Vixen take the oath, they do not repeat "do solumnly swear".
  • When Whistler and Vixen finish off saying the oath, their lip and beak movements are not in sync with the words being spoken.
